Chilly Pond Heroism

At Sandpiper, we like to say our team will go the extra mile to get the job done… but sometimes, they just dive right in.

Case in point: back in 2004, during a culvert installation and environmental project at DeBoville Slough in Coquitlam, one of our metal walls decided it preferred life underwater and slipped off the bank into the pond. Not exactly part of the plan.

Before anyone could even start pointing fingers or forming a "committee," our then-laborer Mody Ballesteros took matters into his own hands - by promptly shedding a few layers and diving straight into the chilly water. No hesitation, no complaints... just pure "let's fix this" energy (and a pretty solid tolerance for cold!).

Thanks to Mody's impromptu swim, we were able to hook up the crane, hoist the wall back into place, and carry on like it was all part of the design.

That's the kind of dedication - and team spirit - that defines the Sandpiper family. Fast forward 22 years, and Mody is now one of our leading pipelayers. Turns out, jumping in (literally) is a great way to move up.

And Mody... apologies for sharing this legendary moment. You didn't think we'd keep that photo of you in your undies forever, did you, buddy?

Once a Sandpiper, Always a Sandpiper

At Sandpiper, we don't just build projects - we build lasting relationships. Over the years, we've been fortunate to welcome incredible people into our team, and what makes us especially proud is how many of them choose to stay and grow with us for the long haul. In fact, more than 42% of our team members have been with us for over a decade - a testament to the strong sense of community and belonging we've built together.

This photo is a perfect example. Taken back in 2016, it features (from left) Carey Drewry (pipelayer), Bryan Mills (foreman), Mody Ballesteros, and Matt Longmuir (pipelayer). Fast forward 10 years, Carey is now a foreman, Bryan is a superintendent and Mody is a pipelayer (Matt left us to join the Canadian Armed Forces).

Moments like this remind us that Sandpiper is more than just a workplace - it's a place where people build careers, friendships, and a shared sense of pride that stands the test of time.
