$16M Hamilton Street Upgrade Brings New Watermain, Storm Sewers, and Rain Gardens to New Westminster

The work on Hamilton Street falls under the city's NWRFP-23-17 program, a major initiative focused on improving underground utilities and modernizing aging systems. Leading the construction is Sandpiper Contracting LLP, which is currently installing a new 8-inch ductile iron watermain along the corridor. The line runs for about 600 metres and is being placed at a depth of roughly 1.3 metres, helping ensure reliable water service for years to come.

This isn't just a watermain job, though. The project also includes a significant amount of storm infrastructure work, with about 2.6 kilometres of new storm sewer being installed, along with service connections to support surrounding properties. The goal is to separate stormwater from older combined sewer systems, which helps reduce system overload during heavy rain and improves overall drainage in the area.

One of the more noticeable upgrades once construction wraps up will be the addition of seven rain gardens. These features are designed to naturally capture and filter rainwater, reducing runoff while adding a bit of green space to the neighbourhood.

With a total value of $16 million, the Hamilton Street project is a key piece of New Westminster's ongoing push to upgrade its underground infrastructure. While the work may cause short-term disruptions, it's all part of building a more reliable, resilient system that can better handle growth and changing weather patterns in the years ahead.
